Today is the Virginia Highland Aurora Coffee's last day of business before it closes permanently to be replaced—maybe— by an outpost of Athens-based Jittery Joe's. The Jittery Joe's will be operated by the people behind another Athens-based local coffee shop, Hendershot's, but the lease is still being negotiated. In March, Hendershot's got notice that they had until June 30 to leave their current Athens space due to a parking/leasing dispute.
Do consider swinging by the North Highland establishment today to wish the Aurora team well if you happen to be in the area; they'll be open until 8 p.m. and there's word of coffee cocktails. On Sunday, a man chained himself to a post outside of the shop (though not for very long) in protest. Aurora is closing less than a month after another local favorite, Steady Hand Pour House, shuttered in Emory Village, though its Little Five Points location will remain open at 468 Moreland Avenue NE.
