Kimball House opens today in downtown Decatur. The restaurant's made its home in the historic Decatur train depot, and it takes its name from the old Kimball House Hotel, which was razed in the mid-1900s. The menu draws inspiration from old hotel menus— look for a large selection of oysters in addition to dishes like lobster and shrimp cocktail, steak salad, grilled lamb, and a chicken entree comprised of foot-on crispy confit chicken leg and chicken breast with sweet potato, roasted sunchokes, and dandelion, endive, and turnip greens.

The highly anticipated restaurant's team includes Michael Gallagher and Miles Macquarrie, from Brick Store Pub and Leon's Full Service, respectively; they'll be running the bar program. Chefs Jeffery Wall and Phillip Meeker will helm the kitchen, and now, word comes that one Ryan Smith, formerly the executive chef of Empire State South and soon-to-be chef at Staplehouse, will join the team in a couple weeks. He'll be there until Staplehouse is ready to open.

Kimball House is open for dinner daily starting at 5 p.m. If you go in, do send a note through the tipline telling us how you like it, and do be sure to say hello to the resident stuffed bobcat, Bob, whom Macquarrie's father-in-law shot himself. 201 East Howard Street, Decatur.
