Old 4th Distillery, operating Atlanta's first legal still in more than a century, is adding gin to its repertoire. After producing vodka for its first year of business, O4D's gin is available at a few package stores around town, and a wider release is expected this week. To celebrate, the distillery is giving thirsty Atlantans a first taste Tuesday night at Kimball House.
The essential Decatur cocktail bar will host a launch party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., pouring up beverages that showcase the new spirit. O4D co-founder Gabe Pilato recently told Eater Atlanta the gin "is easy to sip and easy to create a cocktail around." Partner Jeff Moore said the process of finding the right recipe was no easy task.
"We created 14 different gins until we landed on the one we loved and the bartenders who helped us out loved," Moore told Eater Atlanta. "We took four styles, had bartenders we trusted taste and comment, then made four more from the derivative and so on until we arrived at our final gin. We wanted our gin to work in a Gin and Tonic and a Dirty Martini. The process of finding that balanced gin was worth it in the end."
Old 4th Distillery opened in November 2014 on Edgewood Avenue with the intent of producing vodka for a year, before taking a crack at gin. O4D has a bourbon in the works, but the aging process will keep it in barrels until 2019.
