Charleston's Jason Stanhope Tops Steven Satterfield at the James Beard Awards

Stanhope is taking a medal back to Charleston.

For the third straight year, Miller Union's Steven Satterfield was a nominee for a James Beard Foundation Award. Once again, Satterfield was snubbed by the awards committee. Jason Stanhope, executive chef at FIG in Charleston, took home the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast. The result was announced at the foundation's Awards Gala & Reception Monday night in Chicago.

Other nominees for the award were John Fleer (Rhubarb, Asheville), Edward Lee (610 Magnolia, Louisville), Andrew Ticer and Michael Hudman (Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, Memphis), and Tandy Wilson, (City House, Nashville). Ashley Christensen of Pool's Downtown Diner in Raleigh, N.C., won in 2014.

Despite Satterfield's loss, Atlanta was represented among the award winners. Keith Schroeder, High Road Craft Ice Cream founder, claimed the Focus on Health cookbook award at the foundation's Book, Broadcast & Journalism Awards Dinner on April 24 in New York.
