Bierschnaps is a potent beverage made by distilling beer. It comes from the Bavarian region of Germany, and the state of Georgia has never produced its own version — until now. Local booze-makers and neighbors Independent Distilling Co. and Three Taverns Craft Brewery have partnered to create Outlier No. 3, a bierschnaps made from Three Taverns’ 2014 Feest Noel Christmas Ale.
Outlier No. 3 was unveiled at Independent’s Decatur tasting room on Saturday, and it’s seeing a limited release to restaurants and retail outlets around town through Savannah Distributing. The beverage is described as having “herbal vanilla aromas that evolve on the palate into cinnamon, cardamom, and mace that are beautifully balanced with oak.” With an abv of 45 percent (that’s 90 proof), it’s strong enough to warm you up on a cold December night.
“Being small allows us the opportunity to do these types of one-offs and collaborative experiments and give people something they’ve never had before” Independent Distilling owner Michael Anderson said . “In this case, a simple question from the other side of the parking lot has resulted in a truly exceptional spirit that I think people are going to be blown away by.”
