Second Self Beer Eyes New Cans, Tasting Room

The Westside brewery is growing

Westside's Second Self Beer Company has been operating at maximum capacity, and now the brewery is looking to expand. Second Self will begin its own canning operation on May 1, according to a Wednesday announcement, and it's working on a new tasting room too.

Second Self currently produces cans of its Thai Wheat and Red Hop Rye thanks to a partnership with a mobile canning company. But in May, the brewery will move canning in house and add two new brews to the enterprise: Maverick & Gose and Mole Porter. The former is Second Self's take on the traditional gose, featuring coriander and a punny, Top Gun-inspired name. The latter is a chocolate porter with "extra spices reminiscent of the Oaxacan mole sauce."

As for the new tasting room, Second Self says it's on track to open early this summer. It will triple the size of the existing tasting room and accommodate up to 200 guests. Local firm Square Feet Studio is in charge of the design, which will include a 24-foot butcher-block bar, separate kitchen for catered events and regular chef pop-ups, and reclaimed wood tables.

Second Self founders Jason Santamaria and Chris Doyle opened their brewery in October 2014. With the forthcoming expansion, which has been a goal since at least last April, they say production will increase by 150 percent.
