Amazon Launches Prime Now Restaurant Delivery in Atlanta

Online retail giant Amazon's restaurant delivery venture has arrived in Atlanta. Subscribers to the company's Prime service can now order from more than 60 local restaurants, Amazon announced Tuesday, and free delivery is guaranteed within an hour.

"Whether you're looking to enjoy great Southern cooking or have a craving for some Mediterranean cuisine, you no longer have to leave your house or office to enjoy some of the city's best local restaurants," Gus Lopez, general manager of Amazon Restaurants, said in a prepared statement. "Starting today, Prime members in Atlanta can enjoy free one-hour delivery with no menu markups through Amazon Restaurants on Prime Now."

Prime Now restaurant delivery enters a competitive market, with companies such as Zifty, GrubHub, Postmates, and UberEats already established. But, Amazon hopes "transparent pricing" will play to its advantage. The company says it will never charge delivery fees, and there are no markups on menu items. In theory, meals ordered through Prime Now come at the same price as if a patron were to dine in at a restaurant. Of course, the annual Prime subscription that is required to use the service checks in at $99.

Amazon first began testing restaurant delivery last August in Seattle, and it also announced expansion to Miami on Tuesday. The service is now available in 12 cities across America, including Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Baltimore, and New York.
