Coming up on its first birthday in a couple of weeks, it appears Old Fourth Ward's Staplehouse is finally getting the recognition it deserves from Atlanta diners. The restaurant made bookings for the month of September available on August 12, and if you head over to its Tock site, you'll find open seats in the Edgewood Avenue dining room are scarce.
That’s right, if you want to have dinner inside, you’ll have to wait until October. September reservations are completely sold out. There is some availability for the patio in September, but only on the 1st and the 3rd at 9:30 p.m., and only for parties of seven or eight. Interested in Sunday lunch? Tables for two are already fully booked, but there is seating available for parties of three or four on the 25th between 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. Walk-ins are always accepted at the bar, but just like reservations, those seats go quickly.
Chef Ryan Smith and his kitchen team have been turning out excellent food since day one, but Staplehouse got off to a slow start (Smith discussed possible reasons for the initial slump with Atlanta Magazine in February). Perhaps the many accolades that have arrived in recent months have convinced Atlanta’s dining public the restaurant is a must-visit.
- Atlanta Magazine’s Corby Kummer awarded Staplehouse four stars, the first such rating from the magazine since 2010.
- It was one of five finalists for the James Beard Foundation’s Best New Restaurant award.
- It’s been named to a few national best-new lists, including the one compiled by Eater’s Bill Addison.
- Bon Appetit just named it the best new restaurant in the country.
Or, perhaps changes at the restaurant have made it more appealing. Staplehouse is doing away with its nightly tasting menus in favor of a la carte, and diners now must pay $20 up front to book a table, as opposed to the old $85 charge.
Whatever the reason, a meal Staplehouse is now tough to get — which is exactly what it should be. Go ahead and plan on booking a table in October whenever reservations go live.
