Park Tavern, the Midtown restaurant and watering hole that sits right on Piedmont Park, has been catching some heat this week for its plan to host Green Bay Packers fans for an NFC Championship Game pep rally on Saturday. After all, the Packers are playing Atlanta’s beloved Falcons on Sunday, and it’s the biggest home game in Falcons history. How could an Atlanta establishment be so hospitable to the enemy at a time like this? Local fans are upset, and Park Tavern wants to win back their hearts.
An employee tells Eater Atlanta the bar is still hosting the pep rally on Saturday, but it will be showing the game on Sunday. And to celebrate the Falcons (and perhaps mend fences), draft beers will be available for a single buck all day.
On Wednesday, Park Tavern apologized to Falcons fans for hosting the event.
"First and foremost, we are and have always been Falcons fans and are rooting for them to make it to the Super Bowl, (AND WIN!),” reads a statement posted on Facebook. “While it was not our intent to offend any Falcons fans, we realize that we did with our choice to host this event and apologize. We take pride in being one of Atlanta’s largest event venues, hosting more than 500 diverse events each year and welcoming both locals and visitors alike to rent our facility.
“As one of the greatest cities filled with people from across the country, we strive to be reflective of what makes Atlanta unique and look forward to continuing to be a part of our incredible community.”
The uproar has made national headlines, and some outlets have resorted to throwing shade at Falcons fans because of their passion. Never mind that Atlanta sports fans are usually being dumped on for their lack of passion. Either way, the local reaction has earned supporters of the Dirty Birds — at least those who believe in the spirit of forgiveness and cheap drinks — a pretty good game day special.
