There’s a great deal of quality dining options at SunTrust Park this year, and the Braves have teamed up with Terrapin Beer Co. for a beverage that will surely grab the attention of curious, beer-drinking baseball fans. One of the experiments to come out of Terrapin’s ballpark-adjacent brew lab is Chopsecutioner, a variation of the company’s Hopsecutioner IPA. The beer is aged with wood used to make baseball bats, according to CBS Sports.
Terrapin brewmaster Brian Buckowski tells CBS Sports’s Matt Snyder the beer has a lower alcohol content than the original Hopsecutioner. As for how wooden bats come into play, Buckowski says Terrapin takes leftovers from Mizuno, one of Major League Baseball’s top suppliers.
“We brew the Chopsecutioner, and after the fermentation we transfer the beer onto the wood chips and then cool the beer down and age it,” Buckowski tells Snyder. “There’s some waste from bats from when they spin them down or carve them down, and that’s the product that we use to age the beer. The wood chips from them making the bats, and that’s what we use.”
Does beer brewed with baseball bats work? Snyder gives it a positive review: “My verdict is that it’s very good. It’s a lighter IPA with a great flavor.”
