Communion, the backyard side project at Top Chef alum Kevin Gillespie’s Decatur restaurant, Revival, is coming back for another season of warm weather. This year, it’s getting a revamp: Communion Cantina will open on Cinco de Mayo, Friday, May 5.
Last year, Communion was inspired by German beer gardens, and this time around, as the name implies, it will have a Mexican theme. The Communion food truck will serve five varieties of tacos along with chips and salsa, cheese dip, and guacamole. Beverages will include local, West Coast, and Mexican beers; margaritas; sangria; and slushy drinks such as frosé and frozen mint juleps.
Patrons previously purchased tokens that could be redeemed for food and drinks in the beer garden. Service will be simple this year: direct payment with cash or credit card.
“We have listened to our guests and are providing lighter, snackier food,” Gillespie said in a prepared statement. “Opening a new restaurant every year is not an option for us, but by changing Communion every season we can keep being creative and trying new things. Next year it might be a Greek tavern.”
Regular hours at Communion Cantina will be Thursday and Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
