Turner Field Redevelopment Will Include a New Brewery and Barbecue Joint

Smoked meats and craft beer will be among the food and drink options at the forthcoming mixed-use development that is part of the Turner Field redevelopment. Developer Carter USA has acquired Letters of Intent for a barbecue joint and a brewery on Georgia Avenue, reports Bisnow.

With the Braves having vacated the city of Atlanta for Cobb County, Georgia State University purchased the Turner Field site and is repurposing the stadium to house its Panthers football team. Longterm plans for the surrounding development include office space, residential units, hotel rooms, retail, and restaurants. The project is officially called Summerhill, the same name of its home neighborhood, and it is scheduled for an October groundbreaking. There’s no word yet on when the first businesses might come online.

Carter USA senior vice president David Nelson tells Eater Atlanta he isn’t quite ready to reveal who’s behind the incoming smokehouse and brewery, but details should surface in the coming months. “We are certainly very excited about how Georgia Avenue is coming together, and we really think it will be an awesome neighborhood street,” Nelson says.

News of a brewery in Summerhill is the latest example of a craft beer explosion in Atlanta’s southern neighborhoods. The Lee + White development that will sit adjacent to the BeltLine in West End will boast new facilities for Westside’s Monday Night Brewing and Decatur-based Wild Heaven Beer. A new brewpub, Banyan Roots Brewing Co., is on board too. Farther north and east, along the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail in Poncey-Highland, award-winning brewmaster Mitch Steele, a 10-year veteran of California’s Stone Brewing, is planning a brewpub of his own.
