An overnight fire damaged Java Monkey coffee shop on Church Street in Decatur, the AJC reports. The extent of the damage is severe enough the shop will likely be closed for weeks. It’s unclear what started the blaze. Fire department officials believe it began in the attic of the building around 11 p.m. Sunday evening.
Two nearby businesses that back up to Java Monkey, Noodle and Fresh to Order, were also damaged by smoke and water. The damage to Noodle was severe enough the restaurant told patrons on Facebook it’s closed for the “foreseeable future.”

The new owners of Java Monkey recently made a few changes to the longstanding business, including not serving wine and beer in the evenings. It seems this decision was due to issues with the liquor license that were recently resolved. However, other changes haven’t gone over well with regulars, according to Decaturish.
Java Monkey is an Eater Atlanta essential coffee shop and has been in business in Decatur for over 20 years. The shop regularly hosts spoken-word artists and poetry slams.
