Alpharetta Bantam + Biddy Is Morphing Into a Barbecue Restaurant

Avalon says goodbye to its southern diner and hello to “Georgia style” barbecue

King Barbecue

Avalon in Alpharetta will soon be home to a new barbecue restaurant in a familiar space. Chefs and partners Shaun Doty and Lance Gunmere are converting their southern diner Bantam + Biddy into King Barbecue, the AJC reported. The pair hope to (re)launch their latest restaurant by early April.

Chef Carey Wise (Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q and Grand Champion BBQ) has been tapped as pit master and managing partner for the soon-to-be-transformed restaurant.

Wise is calling King’s barbecue “Georgia style”, referring to the varying types of smoked meats found throughout the state. Expect a bit of Texas in the brisket, a bit of North Carolina in the sauce, and ribs fashioned after those found in St. Louis.

The menu will consist of lots of fresh vegetables and salads as well as a few recognizable Bantam + Biddy dishes. Brunch is also planned and will include biscuits combined with barbecue. Wise alluded to biscuits made with brisket and jalapeño jelly or pork topped with apple butter.

Renderings seem to suggest King Barbecue is counter service and may host live music.

This isn’t the first time Doty and Gunmere have revamped one of their Bantam + Biddys. In November 2016, they closed the Crescent Avenue restaurant and reopened as the more upscale Federal. Last month, the partners transformed the Lenox location into ATL Taco. Only the original Ansley Mall location of Bantam + Biddy remains.
