Say It Isn’t So — El Mexicano on Moreland Avenue to Close

El Mexicano, the beloved Moreland Avenue Mexican restaurant near East Atlanta known for its street tacos, will close on May 20, What Now Atlanta first reported. Owners Roxana and Octavio Aguirre announced the restaurant’s closure on Facebook Monday evening.

A reason for the closure was not given, however, rumors have been circling that the property on which El Mexicano sits may have been sold.

Part of the Facebook announcement reads:
“These past four years have truly been amazing and we have all of YOU to thank. We have tried our hardest to stay at this location but unfortunately we’re not able to make things work. We have poured our heart and soul to El Mexicano since day one of opening and will continue to do so until our last day.”

El Mexicano’s staff will be given positions at the Aguirre’s new restaurant Patria Cocina— telling distressed commenters on the Facebook post, “they [staff] are our second family and would not changed them for anything.”

The Aguirre’s anticipate a summer opening for Patria Cocina. The Mexican restaurant plans to serve a similar menu to El Mexicano. Fingers crossed it includes their street tacos.

Patria Cocina will be located at the forthcoming Beacon complex at 1039 Grant Street on the edge of Grant Park and Peoplestown.
