Burmese restaurant and Eater 38 essential Royal Myanmar Cuisine in Clarkston is closed. The restaurant, located on Brockett Road just outside the perimeter, underwent a change of ownership recently prior to the closure.
The ownership change is mentioned in two Yelp reviews dated July 15, 2018, along with menu issues and food shortages. In the last Yelp review dated last week on August 9, food shortages continued to plague the restaurant with the reviewer stating, “Don’t think this restaurant will last long.”
Royal Myanmar opened in 2016 and became a critical darling with Atlanta’s food media. The fish soup, palata flatbread with curry sauce, chicken coconut soup, and tea leaf salad were regularly praised by both diners and critics.
In September 2017, Atlanta Magazine restaurant critic Christiane Lauterbach raved about Royal Myanmar’s tea leaf salad and spoke of Burmese food’s “rare and beguiling appearances on the Atlanta dining landscape.” AJC dining critic Wyatt Williams in his March 2017 review called the tea salad “intoxicating”, the palatas a “satisfying note of bready comfort food”, and said the restaurant “should finally, permanently put Burmese food on metro Atlanta’s map.”
Sadly, it looks like that last observation is not to be.
