It may be just a few more weeks until the much-loved Sichuan favorite Gu’s Dumplings (née Gu’s Bistro) heads back to Buford Highway. The Krog Street Market (KSM) food stall announced on Facebook that it’s opening a full-service restaurant called Gu’s Kitchen in the former Yong He Zhi Jia space next to Pho Bac at the Orient Center in Chamblee. Gu’s Bistro closed in Doraville, where Good Luck Gourmet now resides, to open Gu’s Dumplings at KSM in 2015. The new restaurant could open by the end of the year.
Gu’s told their devoted regulars at the time of the closure they were searching for a new Gu’s Bistro location. It never came to fruition. That is, until Sunday when the sign went up at Orient Center officially marking their return to Buford Highway.
The restaurant and subsequent KSM stall are known for numbing yet comforting takes on Sichuan cuisine. The stall’s menu includes popular Gu’s Bistro staples Zhong-style dumplings, chengdu cold noodles, and spicy dried eggplant. Gu’s says in the Facebook post, the menu for Gu’s Kitchen’s will not be “the same as Gu’s Bistro but different items than Gu’s Dumplings at Krog Street.”
In Doraville, Gu’s Bistro often saw people waiting for up to an hour for a seat — which was more than worth it. While the move to Krog Street Market was made, in part, to keep up with that demand, the dishes lost some of their luster at KSM; likely due to producing food at-volume.
Eater Atlanta has reached out for more information and will update this story when it becomes available.
Gu’s Dumplings also has a location at SunTrust Park. A third kiosk will open at the food hall of Forsyth County mega-development Halycon next year.
