First, Pepsi (sadly, the official soft drink of the NFL) attempts a tepid takeover of Coca-Cola city. Then, Lowe’s invades Home Depot’s home turf in Atlanta. And now, Boston-based Wahlburgers is planting a flag in the name of the New England Patriots at The Battery Atlanta in Cobb County. The Super Bowl is bringing the cola, burger, and home improvement store wars to the ATL.
The burger franchise, owned by chef Paul, A-list actor Mark, and New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg, is transforming its Battery Atlanta restaurant into “Foxborough South” during Super Bowl week. For those unaware of the significance of this temporary moniker, the Patriots’ stadium is located in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Wahlburgers is staking one more claim as the “officially unofficial” Atlanta headquarters for Patriot fans. In honor of the team’s five NFL championships, Wahlburgers is offering a “5 Ring Burger” — a beef burger topped with five onion rings, spicy ketchup, cheddar, and bacon — through Super Bowl Sunday. The boastfully-named burger comes with a side and a fountain drink. The combo is $12.87. That sticker price is a not-so-subtle reference to Pats’ quarterback Tom Brady (12) and tight end Rob Gronkowski (87).
In the spirit of Southern hospitality, Los Angeles Rams fans who may feel unwelcome at “Foxborough South” can indulge in one of Atlanta’s many all-star burgers. These include the legendary “Ghetto Burger” created by the late Ann Price at Ann’s Snack Bar, the Sublime Doughnuts burger at Cypress Street Pint & Plate, and The General Muir burger, topped with American cheese, shaved onion, bread and butter pickles, and the option to add crispy pastrami. While a little healthy competition is always welcome in Atlanta, this is one game the Patriots — sorry, Wahlburgers — will likely lose in the ATL. Bless their hearts.
To add to the burger-inspired fandemonium at Battery Atlanta, chef Paul Wahlberg will host a meet-and-greet at the restaurant, Thursday, January 31, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There’s a chance those other Wahlberg brothers could make an appearance at some point this week, too.
Wahlburgers announced last August it will open a second Georgia location in downtown Atlanta later this year on Peachtree Street.
