Pay and ‘Party Like It’s 1999’ Before Souper Jenny Decatur Closes Saturday

The Decatur location rolls back its prices to 1999 on Friday and Saturday

Souper Jenny closes after five years in downtown Decatur on Saturday, February 23, Atlanta Magazine reports. The Decatur restaurant still plans to celebrate Souper Jenny’s 20th anniversary, however, by turning back the clock and its prices to 1999 on Friday and Saturday.

All soups, sandwiches, and salads are $5 each and a soup and sandwich or salad combo is $10 each until the restaurant closes on Saturday afternoon.

Owner Jenny Levison alluded to the restaurant’s eventual closure last June, while announcing the opening of a Souper Jenny in Roswell. Levison says high rents and parking have been problems for the Decatur location, telling Atlanta Magazine the lease was up on the restaurant and with rents rising in the city, “It seemed like it was time” to close.

“Our lease is up and the downtown parking has become such an issue for us. We have loved being a part of this wonderful community,” Levison writes on Souper Jenny Decatur’s Facebook page.

Parking is metered during the weekdays and on Saturdays or permitted for residents on streets in and around downtown Decatur. There are also a handful of paid lots and parking decks. Levison says Decatur is a walkable city, but feels much of that foot traffic is seen during the weekends and evenings, after the restaurant is closed.

In October, longtime Decatur breakfast staple Thumbs Up Diner closed after a decade, blaming the rising rents in the city east of Atlanta. The restaurant’s owners urged residents to speak out against recent rent hikes in Decatur. DaVinci’s Pizza broke its lease earlier in 2018 due to the high rent at its Decatur location.

Levison isn’t ruling out relocating in Decatur, and is also considering locations in Vinings and at the airport. Her Decatur staff have been placed in positions at the Buckhead, Westside, and Brookhaven restaurants. The Roswell restaurant should open in mid-March behind the Roswell Visitors Center and Little Red Playhouse across from the historic town square.
