Hawkers Asian Street Fare, set to debut today, apparently opened last week at SPX Alley in Old Fourth Ward, according to reviews already listed on Yelp. The Florida-based restaurant, set along the Eastside Beltline trail in the same complex as pizzeria Nina & Rafi, serves food found at “hawkers” or Asian street food stalls.
Expect a mix of dishes on the menu like roti with Malaysian curry, pad Thai, Korean twice fried wings, Canton cod, and miso pork belly ramen. Several dishes at Hawkers are based on recipes from co-founder Allen Lo’s family, including the Singapore “chili” crab, a soft shell crab with chili garlic sauce served on a fried bao bun.
At 4,500-square-feet, Hawkers includes a Beltline-facing patio with retractable doors, an indoor/outdoor bar, and a poster wall with more than 1,000 hand-designed art and advertising posters by Adam Smajstrla. The Atlanta restaurant also features a mural inspired by neighboring Cabbagetown’s graffiti- and street art-filled Krog Street tunnel.
Hawkers is owned by Lo, Kaleb Harrell, Wayne Yung, and Kin Ho. The restaurant, first opened in Orlando in 2011, has five Florida locations and a location in Charlotte, North Carolina. Four other restaurants should open later this year around the Southeast.
In addition to Nina & Rafi, Hawkers joins margarita bar Guac y Margys, cafe and cocktail bar the James Room, Butter and Cream ice cream parlor, Pour Taproom, and the forthcoming Bennett’s Market & Deli at SPX Alley.
Open Sunday - Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.
