Restaurateur Michael Lo and chef George Yu of Korean Wives Hospitality Group have filed permits with City of Atlanta to open Salaryman in the former Mary Hoopa’s House of Fried Chicken in East Lake. The restaurant is located on the corner of Hosea L. Williams Drive and 2nd Avenue at the Hosea and 2nd complex.
Lo confirmed the news in an email Tuesday evening, but tells Eater Atlanta there is “nothing more [to share] at this time” on the forthcoming restaurant, including menu details.
The name “Salaryman” refers to a salaried, white-collar business person in Japan. It could indicate which way Lo and Yu are leaning, in terms of food — Japanese.
According to the restaurant’s liquor license application, Salaryman plans to open daily at 5 p.m. and seats approximately 40 people in the dining room and ten at the bar, with seating for an additional 25 people, likely on the patio.
The partners own Suzy Siu’s Baos at Krog Street Market, Ramen Station in Grant Park, Son of a Bear Korean tavern in Oakhurst, and Noona Korean Steakhouse in Duluth. Lo and Yu recently closed Taiyo Ramen (formerly Makan) after five years inside the Courtyard Hotel in Decatur.

Mary Hoopa’s, owned by One Eared Stag’s chef Robert Phalen, closed after a year at the complex this February. Salaryman’s neighbors in the building include gastropub Poor Hendrix and Mix’D Up Burgers as well as Greater Good BBQ across the street.
