Athens import Maepole, a “healthy”, quick-serve cross between the Southern meat and three and a build-your-own bowl restaurant, opens in Summerhill later this year.
Maepole, co-owned by chef Peter Dale (the National, Condor Chocolates, and Seabear Oyster Bar), takes up residence in what is currently a gravel parking lot across from Wood’s Chapel BBQ, part of a new 11,000-square-foot phase set to begin construction soon along Georgia Avenue.
As with the Athens restaurant, diners first choose a base like brown rice or super greens for their plate, then two sides such as mac and cheese, collards, or roast vegetables, and finally a meat or vegan protein and a sauce. The menu also offers fully-compiled “chef’s selections” plates.
All the meats at Maepole are apparently hormone- and antibiotic-free, and nothing on the menu contains high-fructose corn syrup. Maepole plans to open for lunch and dinner.
“We believe in serving real, quick, wholesome food at an accessible price point, and since opening Maepole in Athens a few years ago , it has always been our vision to grow this concept beyond our hometown. We knew opening a location in Atlanta was a natural next step,” Dale says in the press release.
Dale and his partners, Michael Clancy and Nathan Goodman, say they were drawn to Summerhill’s “character”. Like Athens and nearby University of Georgia, the Summerhill restaurant is located near Georgia State University and is home to many of the institution’s students and professors.
Maepole joins Junior’s Pizza, Woods Chapel Barbecue, Halfway Crooks Beer, and Little Tart Bakeshop and Big Softie as well as forthcoming restaurants How Crispy Express sandwich counter, Little Bear, Concept, Redacted, Hot Dog Pete’s and Hero Doughnuts, D Boca N Boca, and game bar Press Start along Georgia Avenue.
