Former Atlas chef Christopher Grossman opens his all-day neighborhood restaurant the Chastain Monday, November 9, in the former Horseradish Grill space. The longtime Southern restaurant, owned by Steve Alterman, closed this past February in Chastain Park after 26 years there. Atlanta-based investment firm ASH Ventures acquired Horseradish Grill last year.

Once home to a roadside country store on the edge of Chastain Park in Buckhead, an interior wall has been removed to allow more natural light to flow throughout the dining room and provide better access to the restaurant’s multiple patios surrounding the garden. The Chastain also features a U-shaped bar with cafe seating and a takeout counter.

Counter-service coffee, breakfast, and a light lunch are served Monday through Saturday, starting at 7 a.m. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. nightly. During the pandemic, the restaurant plans to limit seating in the dining room, with dinner reservations also available outside on the Old Oak Terrace beneath a historic oak tree. The Old Oak Terrace is open for seating without reservations in the morning. Patrons are required to wear masks when not seated at a table.

The Chastain also offers curbside pick-up. The option to order online for takeout should be available by the end of November.

Described as a “New American bistro,” most of the ingredients for the 20 or so dishes served on Grossman’s menu are sourced from the restaurant’s garden. The dinner menu includes everything from lobster agnoletti and beef tenderloin to shrimp and grits, roasted garden broccoli, and butternut squash soup.

Grossman, whose previous work includes the French Laundry and Gerry Klaskala’s Aria in Buckhead, serves as both the restaurant’s executive chef and operating partner. He’s joined in the kitchen by former Atlas pastry chef Christian Castillo and executive sous chef Jessica Mullice (Empire State South.)

In addition to cocktails from beverage manager Juan Cortes, the Chastain also serves a broad selection of wine and local beers on draft.
