A new sandwich shop from D.B.A. Barbecue opens Wednesday, December 30, at Irwin Street Market in the Old Fourth Ward. Called D.B.A. Sandwich Company, the shop takes over the former Academy Coffee kiosk at the market and serves the Virginia-Highland barbecue restaurant’s most popular sandwiches.
Owner Matt Coggin plans to run the sandwich counter as a takeout operation with just three employees. The Irwin Street Market menu features nine sandwiches, including pulled pork, chopped brisket, and a Cuban, Brunswick stew, sides like mac and cheese, and snacks, such as D.B.A.’s pimento cheese with Alabama fire crackers.
“We opened DBA Barbecue in February 2009, in the height of the recession, and now we’re opening DBA Sandwich Company during a worldwide pandemic,” Coggin writes in a press release. “Last year on New Year’s Eve, the entire front of DBA Barbecue fell off into the parking lot, rendering our entrance unusable for several days. A year to-the-day, we’re opening our new restaurant. I guess tough times are kind of our most fortuitous times, and opening DBA Sandwich Company is a nice way to book-end the year.”
For its opening on Wednesday, the sandwich counter plans to offer a New Year’s Day special featuring a slider version of its pulled pork sandwich served with a side of collards and black eye peas.
D.B.A. Sandwich Company joins Glide Pizza and Jake’s Ice Cream at Irwin Street Market.
