Cobb County Korean-Southern barbecue restaurant Heirloom Market BBQ received a generous tip from one its customers last week. Shayne Gallaway sent owners Cody Taylor and Jiyeon Lee $250 to help cover the week’s food costs at their restaurant on Akers Mill Road.
The couple is paying Gallaway’s generosity forward by providing meals to three Atlanta area hospitals and healthcare workers caring for patients battling COVID-19.
Gallaway learned Taylor and Lee were putting aside a portion of their takeout food budget to create meals for local hospital workers and firefighters working on the COVID-19 frontlines. Lee tells Eater Atlanta that $250 feeds 100 healthcare workers. The menu typically includes easily reheated dishes like baked chicken, cheesy pasta, salad, and brownies.
Heirloom dropped off the first set of meals using Gallaway’s donation on Tuesday to Piedmont Hospital in Buckhead. Staff were so appreciative, they presented the restaurant with a thank you card and tipped for the free meals.
Prior to the shelter-in-place order, the Cobb County restaurant often saw lines out the door during lunch for Taylor and Lee’s Korean-inspired Southern barbecue and sides. The menu includes one of Atlanta’s best barbecue pork sandwiches, the spicy Korean pork sandwich made with chopped rib meat marinated in fermented chile paste, topped with kimchi coleslaw, black sesame seeds, and a sliced scallion.
Heirloom continues to provide takeout for curbside pick-up, Tuesday through Saturday. People can order and pay online.
Check the Georgia Department of Public Health website for guidance and twice-daily updates on the latest number of reported COVID-19 cases.
