Gluten-free bakery and coffee shop Good Karma Coffee House closes at the end of February after nearly nine years in Avondale Estates. According to a Facebook post, the closure is due in large part to a significant increase in rent on the shop and a shift in business since the pandemic began last March.
Comments left on the February 4 Facebook post point to the rent being tripled by the new owner of the property. A GoFundMe campaign has now been created in hopes of raising $10,000 for the staff of Good Karma Coffee House.
“It saddens our hearts to announce we will be closing at the end of February. The community and staff worked really hard to help us survive during this pandemic,” the GoFundMe page reads. “Just as progress was beginning to happen, we were notified there would be a significant increase in rent. With this shocking news, we had to accept that the business would not be able to sustain itself.”
Sharonda Frazier opened Good Karma Coffee House and its bakery in 2012. In addition to coffee and coffee drinks, the certified gluten-free breakfast and lunch spot tucked away in Avondale Estates offers build-your-own breakfast sandwiches on a house-made biscuits, soups, omelettes, French toast and Belgian waffles, and a case filled with fresh baked goods and pastries. Many items on the menu are also vegan, vegetarian, or dairy- and egg-free.
