The second location of Cuban sandwich and coffee shop Cubanos ATL opens today in Cumming, Georgia, at Cumming Marketplace. The menu is the same for both the Sandy Springs and Cumming locations, and it will soon include a vegan option of the El Miami sandwich.

Owner Ozzy Llanes announced his plans to open a new location late last year, and like the Sandy Springs sandwich shop, it was to reside inside a custom-built tiny house. However, Llanes had to alter those plans due to permitting issues with Forsyth County. Instead, Cubanos ATL takes over space connected to Jax Fine Wine and Spirits at Cumming Marketplace.

“They didn’t allow tiny houses, so we’re opening a brick and mortar,” Llanes said in March. “Same concept — all to-go. Everything is done, just waiting for the health department permit.”

Cuban-born Llanes moved to Atlanta from Miami over a decade ago and admits he spent years searching for a “descent” Cuban sandwich in the metro area. He opened the original Cubanos ATL in Sandy Springs in August 2020. The takeout-only Cuban sandwich shop, located in the parking lot of a small retail plaza on Roswell Road, resides inside a tiny house Llanes custom-designed and built himself. It quickly gained a following, with lines often snaking around the parking lot during lunch.

Cubanos ATL features four sandwiches on the menu: a traditional Cuban called El Miami; the El Tampa with roast pork, ham, salami, pickles, and Swiss cheese; the El Pollo chicken sandwich mixed with aioli and topped with pickles and Swiss cheese; and a media noche. All sandwiches are created using family recipes and come served on La Segunda Central Bakery bread — the oldest Cuban bread maker in the United States. In addition to sandwiches, the shop also serves breakfast and Cuban coffee and coffee drinks.

Llanes plans to open a third location as a food stall inside northwest Atlanta food hall Chattahoochee Food Works in June. Earlier this year, he reached an agreement with a property owner in downtown Roswell to open a fourth location in another custom-built tiny house behind former live music venue Gypsy Rose on Alpharetta Street. No word on whether the tiny house plans for that sandwich shop have been approved yet by city of Roswell officials.
