Mexican restaurant and tequila bar Antiguo Lobo, owned by Jesús Oñate Jr., is now open on Peachtree Road in historic downtown Chamblee. Antiguo Lobo (“old wolf”) honors his late father with a menu of dishes from multiple regions throughout Mexico.
Located inside a former antiques store, the design for Antiguo Lobo resembles many of the restaurants Oñate Jr. grew up working in, featuring vintage-inspired booths and bar seating and sarape patterns accenting walls, benches, and other decor elements. A mural along the back wall in the dining room is dedicated to his father and depicts images from his father’s life, including his first car in America — a 1977 Pontiac Can-Am.
Antiguo Lobo also includes a large, open-air patio in front of the building.

As for the menu, expect dishes such as Molcajete El Monstruo with a choice of steak, chicken, or shrimp served in a volcanic rock mortar, enchiladas verdes, and pollo al mole, as well as street corn, aguachile, and a selection of tacos served in fresh-made corn tortillas. Cocktails from Oñate Jr., a trained tequila expert and certified Master mezcalier, center around margaritas and other drinks using agave-based spirits like mezcal.
Jesús Oñate Sr. immigrated to the United States in 1971 from Jalisco and opened his first restaurant in Chamblee. He later went on to own five Monterrey restaurants, a location of El Sombrero, the Lazy Donkey, and eight El Ranchero restaurants in Georgia.
Oñate Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps, running one of the family’s Monterrey restaurants in Smyrna, before opening his own restaurants Zapata in Norcross, Taqueria on Broad in downtown Atlanta, and Monterrey of Marietta.
