After discontinuing weekend breakfast earlier this summer, Candler Park neighborhood restaurant and pop-up incubator Gato is bringing it back temporarily in October with Taiwanese-American food pop-up Mighty Hans.

Beginning Saturday, October 9, chef Fu-Mao Sun and his pop-up Mighty Hans will offer a Taiwanese-style breakfast from the petite kitchen at Gato. While the menu changes frequently, past pop-ups included breakfast items like fried crullers, a doughnut (feng li su) filled with pineapple custard and topped with pineapple glaze, and Taiwanese rice balls (fan tuan) made from hot sticky rice stuffed with pickled radish, pickled mustard greens, a braised egg, pork floss, and cruller.

The Saturday breakfast pop-up runs through November, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with morning cocktails from Atlanta bartender Anthony Carpenter. Sun tells Eater there’s a possibility Mighty Hans could continue serving breakfast at Gato in December, too.

Mighty Hans joins a growing list of pop-ups hosted by Gato owner Nicholas Stinson, who regularly opens his kitchen to chefs and restaurant startups, some of which have gone on to become successful standalone establishments, like Talat Market and Little Bear. Following the departure of Talat Market in 2018, Stinson began offering his own series of dinners centered on dishes from southern Mexico and the Yucatán.

Stinson hopes to continue amping up the pop-up and chef collaborations at Gato over the next year. Italian restaurant pop-up Gigi’s is currently in residence there on Monday and Tuesday evenings through the fall serving “New York-style Italian food”.

Beyond Gato, Sun most recently popped up at Ration and Dram, located on the border of the Kirkwood and Edgewood neighborhoods, and can frequently be found popping up around Atlanta at breweries and weekend pop-ups held in the parking lot of A Mano in the Old Fourth Ward. Ration and Dram becomes Dead End Drinks on October 1 and begins permanently operating as a pop-up kitchen paired with cocktails, beer, and wine from the bar.

Mighty Hans Taiwan Breakfast, Saturdays at Gato, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Outdoor seating available. Follow Gato on Instagram for dinner menu and pop-up updates.
