A new Decatur pizzeria takes over where another left off, when Corner Slice opens Thursday, November 17, in the former Avellino’s space on West College Avenue. And thick-crust pan pizzas and sandwiches served on freshly baked focaccia bread are on the menu.
Owned by a former partner in Comet Pub and Lanes, Ben Horgan, an announcement posted to social media indicates Corner Slice opens Thursday evening at 4 p.m. serving Detroit-style bar pies, wings, and sandwiches like a hero and meatball parmesan. Some pizzas can come served with gluten-free crusts by request. Horgan told Eater in May he plans to keep the vibe and menu at the pizzeria low key.
Horgan got his start in the pizza business over two decades ago working at Atlanta pizzeria institution Everybody’s Pizza. The pizzeria closed in Virginia-Highland in 2010, followed by the Decatur location three years later after 40 years at Emory Village. Horgan went on to become the head chef, then general manager, at Twain’s Brewpub and Billiards in Decatur, before partnering in bowling alley Comet Pub and Lanes on Church Street in the city.
A new restaurant and mezcal bar from the owners of El Tesoro opened in September on the western corner of the small West College retail strip. Tortuga y Chango took over the former Lawrence’s Cafe space and serves dishes styled after those found in Acapulco and the Pacific coast of Guerrero, Mexico, and the origin region of mezcal in Oaxaca. The West College complex is also home to Revolution Doughnuts and Ale Yeah craft beer shop.
