Mexi-Cali cafe La Chiquiada, owned by Catherine Zuber, is opening in downtown Decatur this spring for breakfast tacos, conchas, and coffee in the morning and street tacos, roast chicken dinners, and happy hour in the evening.
Located on West Trinity Place in the same building as co-working space WeWork, La Chiquiada will feature banquette seating and a 12-seat bar inside, along with a covered patio overlooking the courtyard at the Amli apartment complex.
Mornings kick off at La Chiquiada with breakfast tacos and freshly baked conchas and buttermilk biscuits topped with jam, carnitas, or chipotle cheese, and coffee from Prevail Coffee roasters. The cafe menu shifts gears later in the day, with lunch and dinner offering street tacos, quesadillas, and larger entrees, like chile relleno, citrus-marinated flank steak, and a roast chicken dinner for two served with rice and fresh tortillas.
Happy Hour features snacks and wines from northern California as well as cocktails, including a margarita, a cucumber gimlet, and a take on the gin fizz. Look for a Mexican-inspired weekend brunch here, too.
“I am a Georgia girl with over a decade in restaurants and hospitality. I have my time in Northern California to thank for my obsession with fresh, local ingredients and Napa Valley wine,” Zuber says. “While Covid brought some major life changes, it has given me the opportunity to bring West Coast ease and California cooking back to my home, Georgia.”
Zuber expects to open La Chiquiada in late April.
Nearby on Decatur Square, seafood bar Boho 115 should open by the end of February in the former Square Pub space on Sycamore Street, next door to tapas restaurant the Iberian Pig. The menu features ceviches, whole fish platters, Argentinian steak, and empanadas from Atlanta-based bakery Belen de la Cruz paired with pisco sours and classic daiquiris.
