Drift Fish House and Oyster Bar, the sibling of Merchant’s Walk restaurants Seed Kitchen and Bar and Stem Wine Bar, closes December 30 after seven years at Avenue East Cobb.

“A number of factors played into the decision, ultimately we asked ourselves if this concept was going to be a good fit for this market over the long term, and we were just unable to get there. Upscale seafood proved to be challenging in luring weekday and lunch diners,” owner and chef Doug Turbush tells Eater. “Weekend business has always been solid, but it takes more than that to meet the demands of sustaining a restaurant business.”

Starting in January, Seed Kitchen will begin hosting Drift’s cocktail dinner series and may also offer the restaurant’s popular Pop’s Lobster Shack patio pop-up in the summer. A patio renovation is currently underway at Seed Kitchen.

Turbush opened Drift at Avenue East Cobb in 2016, following the successes of Seed Kitchen and Stem Wine Bar one mile south at Merchant’s Walk on Johnson Ferry Road. Drift is known for its wood-fired seafood dishes and fresh fish entrees, as well as for oysters and seafood towers. On summer weekends, the patio at Drift transforms into Pop’s Lobster Shack serving New England-style seafood dishes like the restaurant’s popular Maine lobster roll.

Avenue East Cobb is currently undergoing a refresh, which will see the complex eventually featuring a new central green space and new restaurants, including Peach State Pizza, Press Waffle Co., and arcade and pinball bar Tin Pin Game Bar. A location of Underwood Hills brewery Round Trip Brewing is also opening at Avenue East Cobb and will serve food.
