La Fonda Latina finally opens in East Lake Wednesday, May 24, according to the AJC. The restaurant takes over the former Lake and Oak BBQ space at the Hosea and 2nd development, home to Poor Hendrix, Salaryman, Hippin Hops Brewery, and Perc Coffee.
La Fonda serves a mix of Spanish, Mexican, and Cuban dishes, like tacos, burritos, the restaurant’s popular paella, and Cuban sandwiches and includes locations in Buckhead, Chastain Park, Candler Park, and Poncey-Highland.
Owners Clay Harper and Mike Nelson, who also own Fellini’s Pizza, closed their longtime Howell Mill Road location of La Fonda in January after 13 years there in order to relocate the restaurant to East Lake. Seafood restaurant Fishmonger is set to open in the Howell Mill Road building, temporarily taking over the space for two years during construction of its permanent location at Star Metals. The property on which the building currently resides is becoming an apartment tower called Stella at Star Metals. Fishmonger should open in June.
The East Lake location of La Fonda is a sort of homecoming for Harper and Nelson, who previously opened Greater Good BBQ in the space, before closing the barbecue restaurant in 2019. Lake and Oak BBQ, owned by chefs Todd Richards and Joshua Lee, took over the space in 2020, but closed two years later.
Harper and Nelson are also part owners in the Hosea and 2nd development with Nathan Bolster and Jay Martin of ReDevStudio, having purchased the four corners at 2nd Avenue and Hosea L. Williams Drive in 2015 from the Cousins Family Foundation.
Open daily, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
