Fancy toast at breakfast or brunch may be half a sandwich, but it’s recently captured the hearts of pseudo-health nuts and coffee shop denizens. Not to mention, toasts topped with avocado, smoked salmon, or jam and ricotta cheese are a respectable, protein-packed alternative to bacon and eggs in the morning. Luckily, local restaurateurs have gotten creative with accoutrements ranging from rock crab to lavender. This list of restaurants is here to help toast seekers secure their avocado-laden, mid-morning snack. Goodbye, home ownership.

Jim Adams Farm & Table

The Riverside market and cafe, Jim Adams Farm & Table, in northwest Atlanta keeps its avocado toast simple, fresh, and, best of all, affordable at only $6. A whole avocado is sliced and set atop toasted H&F multigrain bread and then topped with fresh vegetables and a secret seasoning blend.

Star Provisions Market & Cafe

Star Provisions — chef Anne Quatrano’s market and cafe — offers three toasts on its breakfast menu. The breads are all baked daily so, that toast is coming out super fresh. Keep it simple in the morning with cinnamon and banner butter. Star Provisions’ avocado on sourdough adds a little tang and zing with the addition of grapefruit and chili powder. For something a bit sweeter, try the ricotta and seasonal preserves on sourdough. Toasts are served with a side salad of seasonal greens from Quatrano’s farm.

Publico Atlanta

This dog-friendly Crescent Avenue pub serves Sunday brunch starting at 11 a.m. and the oft-ordered avocado toast is listed among the menu offerings. The toast consists of avocado slathered over half a grilled baguette and topped with pico de gallo, pickled onions, charred corn, and cotija cheese and drizzled with cilantro crema.

It turns out people can indeed get carbs at Upbeet. While fancy toast fans might be sacrificing flavor for nutritional value, most notably through Upbeet’s use of sprouted wheat or millet-chia bread, their guts may be thanking them later.

For those seeking toast at this Midtown micro-food hall, look no further than the TGM Bagel stall. Both the hot smoked salmon and haas avocado varieties come with Mediterranean flair, while the almond butter and banana toast is embellished with honey and bee pollen.

Banjo Coffee

This Avondale Estates spot offers four varieties, with the Laven-Dairy standing out. Honey complements goat cheese on sourdough in a way that makes the sticky endeavor of actually eating the thing worth it, while the mixture of lavender and carbohydrates makes one feel chill and drowsy.

This popular coffee shop and bar in Poncey-Highland offers an irresistible toast upgrade – rock crab – to an otherwise steady sourdough topped with avocado, lemon juice, radish slices, and pepper flakes. The toast tastes just as good as it – and the restaurant – looks. Sorry, this toast is only available during brunch on the weekends.

The Poncey Highland

This quaint cafe and coffeehouse located on North Highland next door to the Highland Inn keeps breakfast and brunch delightfully unpretentious. It also keeps rolling out fancy toast specials throughout the week, including those topped with hummus, onions, and chives or avocado toast topped with fresh berries and feta cheese. Head here for a quiet solo spot while reading or getting in some work.

Bread & Butterfly

Avocado toast seekers will have to catch it early and pay a pretty penny, but Bread & Butterfly boasts some of the best avocado toast in the city. The restaurant’s toast features a poached egg, sea salt, Espelette pepper, and a squeeze of lime. It’s extra, but it’s damn good.

Condesa Coffee

When it comes to fancy toast, Condesa may have too many options. So, let’s focus on the best: The prosciutto atop lemony ricotta and arugula is kind of like a dessert with meat on top, while the thin, chilled beets and garlicky schmear mesh perfectly.

Guac y Margys

Margarita bar Guac y Margys is the new bar in town at SPX Alley on the Eastside Beltline trail and its menu is loaded with nothing but margaritas—nine of them, to be exact. GyM serves brunch on the weekends that, of course, includes avocado toast. It’s affectionally referred to as “Millennial Toast.” Mashed avocado is smeared on half a toasted H&F Bread baguette, drizzled with olive oil, topped with pickled onions and a sliced hardboiled egg, and sprinkled with sea salt. Order at the counter and grab a seat indoors or at one of the picnic tables out front on the patio.

There’s a lot drawing customers to this Memorial Drive spot: breakfast tacos, good coffee, a daily rotation of pastries, and a dog-friendly patio with a killer aesthetic. But the planky, house-smoked salmon chive schmear on sourdough triumphs.
