Ria Pell’s tragic passing in 2013 hasn’t slowed her restaurant Ria’s Bluebird down. The Grant Park restaurant still makes the best caramelized banana pancakes in town and typically includes a wait on the weekends, now eased by more seating on the new parking lot covered patio. Ria’s Babybird also makes appearances on occasion at Boggs Social in the West End on the weekends.

Brooklyn Bagel Bakery & Deli

The bagels at Brooklyn Bagel are kettle boiled before baking, giving them a crispy, blistered crust that retain a soft, fluffy inside. Look for traditional bagel flavors, along with a few fun choices, like rainbow, French toast, bacon cheddar, and chocolate chip. In the morning, the line often snakes back to the front door of the Ansley Mall location, as people order bagel sandwiches topped with white fish salad, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions or one of the shop’s eggwiches. Try the the Rio Grande smeared with jalapeno cream cheese and topped with eggs and choice of meat such as pastrami or sausage. Baker Erika Council relocated her Irwin Street Market stall to larger quarters, taking over the former Field Day space on Highland and transforming the biscuit business into a restaurant with seating. Folks can still expect Council’s fluffy buttermilk biscuit sandwiches on the menu, including her signature Glori-Fried chicken biscuit and breakfast standards like the BEC topped with American cheese. There’s also B’Onuts made from biscuit dough and delectable cinnamon rolls. Council plans to contine expanding the menu, too, which could soon include pancakes, catfish and grits, and Sunday brunch.

Julianna's Coffee & Crepes

Julianna’s is a petite restaurant tucked inside a circa-1901 house on Lake Avenue in Inman Park serving Hungarian-style savory and sweet crepes made from an old family recipe. The Breakfasty One with scrambled eggs, ham, Swiss, and sautéed mushrooms or the Pecan Pleasure with strawberry, cinnamon, and pecans topped with honey are both good choices in the morning. The Royale with Tasso ham, Gruyere, field greens, and peach chutney is a hearty choice for lunch.

Java Jive claims to serve Atlanta’s “best biscuit” (it might be true, too) and offers hearty diner breakfast dishes like the Sante Fe Scramble with spicy chorizo sausage, red peppers, onions, potatoes, cheddar, and salsa. It comes with a choice of biscuit or toast. Get the biscuit.
