Atlanta has a strong burger scene, with nationally recognized options and under-the-radar favorites that have been around for a while. But this isn't about those old standards. Fred's Meat & Bread

From chef Todd Ginsberg, who has plenty of burger experience at Bocado and The General Muir, the double-stack at this Krog Street Market stall is a hit. Dressed simply with housemade mayo, American cheese, and bread-and-butter pickles, it's a tasty homage to a burger one might find at a roadside shack. [Photo via Fred's Meat & Bread]

Hi-Five Diner

Owner Alex Brownstein transformed Villains into Hi-Five Diner earlier this year, and it's no surprise that the man behind Grindhouse has come up with another tasty burger. The two patties come with lettuce, tomato, onion, and "special sauce," and available add-ons include grilled onions, various cheeses, avocado, roasted green chiles, bacon, and a fried egg. Made popular at a pop-up inside Joystick Gamebar, "The Hank" is now available at Illegal Food's full-service Virginia-Highland restaurant. The house-ground, burger is topped with American cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, Vidalia onion, housemade dill pickles, and Illegal Food's version of "special sauce." [Photo: Sarah Dodge]

It's not always on the menu, but the burger at Angus Brown and Nhan Le's Buckhead restaurant is worth an order when it's available. A single chargrilled patty comes with cheddar, American, and onion, and it's cooked to medium rare. [Photo via Lusca]

Shake Shack

Yes, it's a chain. But Shake Shack is in the running for the most popular burger chain in America. The standard ShackBurger is topped with lettuce, tomato, and "ShackSauce," and it's available as a single or a double. [Photo]
